Committed to Sustainability

Building a sustainable business for the future

At Pellerin Books, sustainability is embedded in how we’ve built the business from the very beginning.

As a new, independent publisher, we’ve had the chance to design our operations thoughtfully - taking into account the environmental impact of how books are made, distributed, and sold, as well as how we work as a team.

We know publishing has a footprint. Our aim is to minimise that footprint wherever we can, to make responsible choices within our means, and to keep improving as we grow.

Pellerin Books is a digital-focus publisher.

Ebooks and audiobooks, rather than paper books, sit at the heart of our publishing model. Unlike many publishers, we only print books when we sell them, which significantly reduces the environmental impact associated with large print runs, global shipping, air freight and the warehousing-and-returns system.

When we do publish in print, we do so carefully and deliberately:

  • We avoid large print runs that leads to overstocks
  • We aim for a firm-sale model where we can
  • And we prioritise print-on-demand and local printing for international sales wherever possible
This approach helps reduce waste, lower emissions, and preserve our planet’s forests.

We work with a small number of trusted print and production partners and prioritise responsible sourcing and manufacturing.

Where print is involved, we aim to:

  • Use paper sourced from sustainably managed forests with FSC certification
  • Work with suppliers who meet recognised environmental standards
  • Maintain open conversations with partners about materials, processes, and impact
We recognise that sustainability is not static, and we expect our practices - and those of our suppliers - to evolve over time.

Pellerin Books is a remote-first company.

By not maintaining a permanent office and minimising daily commuting, we reduce our operational footprint and energy use.

We also believe that sustainable businesses are built by people who are supported to work well, not endlessly. Designing realistic workloads, encouraging proper rest, and avoiding overproduction are part of our wider commitment to long-term sustainability - for the business, for our team, and for the books we publish.

Pellerin Books is a signatory to Publishing Declares Climate Action.

By signing the pledge, we commit to:

  • Supporting the global effort to limit warming to 1.5°C
  • Working towards measurable reductions in our environmental impact as the business grows
  • Protecting nature and biodiversity through responsible sourcing and production
  • Collaborating with peers, partners, authors, and suppliers to turn commitments into action
  • Using our platform thoughtfully to support awareness and positive change

We don’t claim to have all the answers, and we won’t pretend that publishing is impact-free.

What we can do is make informed choices, stay accountable, and keep sustainability part of our decision-making as Pellerin Books grows.

This statement will evolve as the company does. As a small, growing publisher, we are realistic about what we can do today - and ambitious about what we want to do better tomorrow.
